Police react to numerous car accidents in Waterbury

WATERBURY, Conn. (WTNH)- Police have identified the two people who were killed in a tragic crash in Waterbury on Wednesday night.

Police say at around seven p.m., 32-year-old Norman Roberts, of Waterbury, was driving a two thousand seventeen Hyundai Elantra east on Homer Street when the head-on collision occurred with a one thousand nine hundred ninety nine Subaru Forester, driven by George Martinez, of Waterbury, who was traveling west on the same road.

Martinez was pronounced dead on scene. Roberts was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police say there were four passengers also in the Forester. Zairano Martinez, 43, was injured and taken to Waterbury Hospital where she is presently in stable condition.

Martinez’ 18-year-old daughter was taken to Waterbury Hospital with non-life menacing injuries. Martinez’ 10-year-old daughter was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in critical condition but later transferred to CCMC in Hartford where she is now in stable condition.

Security cameras at a nearby gas station captured this crash. The manager of the gas station showcased News eight some of that surveillance movie. A backup copy is now in the palms of police. Investigators will look at that hoping it provides some answers as to what caused this deadly crash.

As the manager of the gas station took another look at the movie, he was startled by the influence of the crash. A ball of white smoke could be seen towards the back of the screen.

“Oh my God,” Sharjeel Khan said. “That was horrible.”

News eight spoke to another man who was at that gas station when the crash happened. He and another person ran to the scene as soon as they heard the cars collide.

“I went to one car, he went to the other car. In the one car, there was a family, a entire family and children. And then the other car there was a single individual who was already deceased. I could tell right away he was deceased. He was the only one in that vehicle. And you know it was terrible. Several minutes later when I realized there was nothing I could do for that individual, they went to the other car and there were kids and they’re bleeding from the face. Didn’t see anybody that seemed to be that injured,” that witness told News 8.

On the day after the crash, News8 was at a puny memorial that was set up at the crash site. Maggie Bonilla was there, placing flowers at the memorial for the friend she lost in the crash – Norman Roberts.

“He was a good friend, a father, a son, she said. “I just want him to be remembered for the good person he was.”

The crash is now under investigation. The surveillance movie from that gas station may shed some light as to what exactly happened.

We will proceed to go after the story and bring you any updates once they become available.
