Datsun, Nissan’s low cost brand is gearing up to inject into the growing compact SUV segment. The company will launch the much-awaited Datsun GO Cross crossover in the country in early 2018. It is expected that the production-spec model of the car could be unveiled at the Delhi Auto Expo 2018. This model will be 4th Datsun product in India and will join the likes of GO hatchback, GO+ MPV and redi-GO. The company which was resurrected by Nissan few years back is yet to witness success in India. With the GO Cross in the pipeline, things are looking up for Datsun.
The model raked in good reviews at the last year’s Delhi Auto Expo and based on that the company is evidently expediting the production. This compact SUV will be developed on Nissan V minus platform that also underpins the Nissan Micra. It is expected to be the most affordable car in its league. Reports suggest that Datsun could launch this crossover in two seating layout – five and 7, but we believe that the petite SUV will be launched as a five-seater. Internally known as EM2, the crossover will foray into the very competitive sub-4 meter SUV segment that is presently ruled by Ford EcoSport and Maruti Vitara Brezza. Due to its crossover-like styling, other similarly priced models like Mahindra KUV100 and Maruti Ignis also come in the radar. The fresh model will be manufactured at the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s production facility in Chennai. It is expected to share several components with GO+ MPV, which should help Datsun to price it competitively.
Visually, the car will have an pushy front end with elements like chrome finished hexagonal front grille with honeycomb backdrop, pulled back LED headlamps, LED fog lamps and skid plates. While on the inwards, the crossover is likely to come with a choice inbetween five and seven seat-layout. The engine set-up could include a 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre oil burner with a standard five-speed manual gearbox.
