Long Island Crashes with Pedestrians or Cyclists Sept two thousand fifteen — Aug 2016

In September two thousand fifteen CLLI embarked collecting news stories about automobile crashes with pedestrians and cyclists on Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk Counties). Below is a tally of the crashes and a description of each one. (The tally is actually of the number of pedestrians and cyclist earnestly injured or worse, not of the total number of crashes. If one crashed injured more than one pedestrian, we count that crash more than once.)

Total Fatalities: seventy one (42 Suffolk, twenty nine Nassau)

Total Critical Injuries: eighteen (9 Suffolk, nine Nassau)

Total Serious Injuries: thirty nine (30 Suffolk, nine Nassau)

Total crashes with no charges reported filed: 95

Total crashes involving alcohol or drugs: nine (two of these were a hit-and-run, later caught)

Total hit-and-runs (motorist not caught): Legal

Total hit-and-runs (later caught, not DWI): Four

Total other with some sort of appearance: Two

An unnamed masculine pedestrian was killed by a tractor-trailer cab on Veterans Memorial Hwy at the intersection of Feuereisen Ave. in Bohemia at nine pm. Driver was not charged. (9/Two/15)

An unnamed masculine pedestrian received a serious gam injury after a van hit him on the S service road of the LIE in Holtsville at about 11:45 pm as he was pursuing after a driver responsible for a hit-and-run crash on the LIE near exit 62. The driver of the vehicle the pedestrian was pursuing was charged with leaving the scene and a DWI. However, the driver who struck the pedestrian does not show up to have been charged with anything. 30-year-old Elvin Ponce was killed in a hit-and-run crash on Redington St in Bay Shore at about Three:Ten am. (6/Five/15)

41-year-old Karen Diaz was killed on Clinton Ave. in Hempstead, just north of Lincoln Blvd at 12:49 pm. Ms. Diaz was believed to be homeless. No charges reported. (6/12/15)

48 year-old pedestrian from Hempstead, Elzire Presume, killed crossing Sunrise Hwy from S to N by W-bound SUV at Louden Street in Massapequa. (9/13/15)

20 year-old cyclist Xavier Royal critically injured by passenger van while crossing Sunrise Hwy at Bayview Avenue in North Amityville (9/15/2015)

57 year-old pedestrian Gary Williams critically injured in hit and run in Coram on NB side of Mill Rd. Victim was homeless and pushing a shopping cart. (9/16/2015)

24 year-old Farmingdale student Eyyad Almargi, of Yonkers, killed the evening after the Car Free Day Long Island rally, while crossing Melville Rd by a vehicle traveling WB (9/17/15)

28 year-old pedestrian Juan Mejia, of Bellport, killed in Bellport crossing Montauk Highway S to N, west of Bellport Ave, on WB side (9/Nineteen/2015)

79 year-old pedestrian Fred Mahnken killed in Shirley crossing William Floyd Parkway by NB vehicle near Lawrence Rd. (9/21/15)

Nineteen year-old pedestrian James Burke critically injured in East Islip crossing Montauk Hwy at Carlton Ave. by a WB vehicle. (9/22/15)

61 year-old pedestrian John Aluska, of Lindenhurst, killed on Montauk Hwy in Lindenhurst by EB hit-and run driver 1:30 AM. (9/28/15)

22 year-old cyclist Charles Velasquez, of Queens, was killed while was traveling EB on WB curb lane of Old Country Rd, Carle Place, by a hit-and-run who was later apprehended, suspected of driving buzzed and charged with vehicular manslaughter. (Ten/01/2015)

58 year-old pedestrian Keith Norman, of Wyndanch, killed by pick-up truck making a left turn from Straight Path onto Long Island Ave. in Wyndanch at 8:30 pm. (Ten/04/2015)

27 year-old Alejandro Chamale Cubule, killed crossing Route 25A, Rocky Point, just east of Rocky Point Rd. (Ten/7/2015)

51 year-old pedestrian Dr. Kenneth Rich, of Smithtown, killed by a NB vehicle on Route one hundred eleven just south of Maple Ave. in Smithtown at around 8:30 pm. Police suspect the driver was inebriated and he was arrested and charged. In addition to the usual brief blurb about this crash, Newsday has a more in depth article about the victim, Dr. Rich. Man, unnamed, critically injured walking in the roadway in front of sixteen Orville Drive, Bohemia, when he was struck by a SB SUV at about 6:45 pm. (Ten/9/2015)

An unnamed pedestrian was earnestly injured with a head wound by a hit and run crash crossing Jerusalem Ave. in Uniondale from north to south at around 7:30 pm. (Ten/11/2015)

Legal year-old Amaya George killed in a crash while crossing Dutch Broadway Rd. in Elmont, NY. The family is calling for motorists to slow down and for better enforcement of traffic laws that protect pedestrians. (Ten/13/2015)

28 year-old Rick Munoz was killed on the Southern State Parkway in Uniondale, just east of Nassau Rd at approximately 1:46 AM. He was driving and crashed a stolen box truck and then walked into the Southern Parkway where he was hit by several cars that didn’t stop. His passenger was also hit, but not killed. A dog railing with them was also hit and killed. We admit that every now and then it actually is the pedestrian’s fault. However, it is still disturbing that the cars did not stop and the dog had very little say on the unfortunate circumstances that put him on the Southern State Parkway. (Ten/15/2015)

40 year-old Michael Dora, from West Babylon and tied to a wheelchair, was killed in a SB hit-and-run crash on Excellent East Neck Rd in Babylon. A Three/30/2016 article in the Daily News reports that the motorist who killed Dora was apprehended. His twin brother was also found guilty of a hit-and-run crash that left a pedestrian injured in 2013. (Ten/16/2015)

A 20-25 year-old unidentified man was critically injured attempting to cross South Broadway near Rave Street in Hicksville around seven pm. (Ten/17/2015)

29 year-old cyclist Julien Robinette critically injured by vehicle making a left off of Horseblock Rd from SB lane onto Express Drive South in Medford. Robinette was traveling in the NB lane. (Ten/Nineteen/2015)

22 year-old pedestrian Carlos Magana was killed by a pick-up while walking along Wicks Rd in Brentwood at five am. (Ten/21/2015)

39 year-old unnamed pedestrian killed crossing Woodbury Road in Woodbury. He was very first head by northbound Vehicle and he was thrown into southbound lane and hit by two other vehicles. (Ten/22/2015)

60-year-old woman killed crossing N. Broadway, near Nevada Street, in Hicksville, NY. (Ten/23/2015)

56-year-old Peter Perri of Shirley killed just after six am crossing Southern Parkway eastbound inbetween exists twenty three and twenty four in North Merrick. Parkway was closed down until Ten:40. Police think his car might have violated down. (Ten/26/2015)

Anael Santiago was earnestly injured by a northbound vehicle while crossing Fresh York Ave, near Debot Rd. in Huntington Station at Ten:25 pm. (Ten/26/2015)

51-year-old cyclist killed crossing Sunrise Hwy from south to north just west of Old Mill Road in Wantaugh around nine pm Saturday (Halloween) night. (Ten/31/2015)

61-year-old cyclist, Peter Accardi, Jr., was killed in Mastic on Montauk Hwy near Fulton Ave. while railing eastbound along the westbound lane. The accident happened at around eleven AM. The driver who killed him was issued a field appearance ticket for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, 3rd Degree. Portrait of Accardi is from a News twelve report. (11.04.2015)

52-year-old pedestrian Olga Aranov killed by northbound vehicle on Broadway, under the LIRR overpass, while attempting to cross the street at 7:55 p.m. (11/12/2015)

63 year-old Robert Fornasier killed crossing street by westbound pick-up truck on Suffolk Avenue near Church Street in Central Islip at 12:13 a.m. when he hit Robert Fornasier. Driver suspected of driving while intoxicated. (11/13/2015)

Unidentified pedestrian killed by WB vehicle on 2nd Avenue east of Brentwood road in Brentwood at around Four:30 a.m. (11/14/2015)

An unidentified female pedestrian was earnestly injured in a crash on 3rd Ave. in Brentwood while attempting to cross the road just before midnight, Friday. (11/20/2015)

21-year-old pedestrian Marcos Castro Gravely Injured at the intersection of Suffolk Ave and Brentwood Rd in Brentwood on Thanksgiving, at about 8:30 PM. (11/26/21015)

82-year-old pedestrian Theodore Schiffman from Boca Raton, FL, was killed at the intersection of Broadway and Nassau Expressway by Southbound vehicle at Five:45 p.m. (11/27/2015)

25-year-old single mother Brittany Leith killed crossing Southern Parkway near exit thirty six at four a.m. after surviving a crash in which she flipped her car. She was going back to the vehicle, in the left lane, to retrieve something from it when another motorist side-swiped her vehicle. Yet another motorist hit the police car protecting her assets, leaving the officer injured. (11/29/2015)

39-year-old masculine pedestrian was admitted to the hospital with brain injuries after a hit-and-run driver struck him on Peach Street in Central Islip at about 7:05 pm. (12/1/2015)

68-year-old Teresa Kochan was earnestly injured by a motorist in a Target Parking lot (124 E. Jericho Tpk) in Huntington Station around 7:55 p.m. Motorist was arrested for failing to have an interlock device installed on his vehicle. An interlock device tests blood alcohol level before permit motorist to drive. (12/02/2015)

Unidentified pedestrian was killed by a hit-and-run driver while crossing Merrick Road at the intersection of Merrick Rd and Charles Street in Lynbrook at about nine p.m. (12/03/2015)

29-year-old pedestrian Gavin Charrette was critically injured by motorist taking a right out of a parking lot onto Sunrise Hwy near Straight Path in Lindenhurst around 6:52 am. (12/04/2015)

An 11-year-old pedestrian was critically injured crossing Main Street in Kings Park at around eleven a.m. (12/05/2015)

A 49-year-old pedestrian Theresa Swedberg was killed on Hallock Landing Rd at 3rd Ave in Rocky Point at around six p.m. The article said she walked into motorist’s lane. (12/Five/2015)

71-year old Rose Dalli was earnestly injured when a landscaping truck backed into her in front of her Ronkonkoma home. She sustained non-life-threatening injuries. (12/Eighteen/2015)

56-year-old Mastic Beach contruction worker Peter Alker was killed at around eight PM by a northbound vehicle on Sills Rd near North Dunton in East Patchogue. He was walking home from the hospital after having been treated for minor injuries following a cycling accident. Alker left two sons and a daughter. (12/Eighteen/2015)
